Important Battles
Out of the many battles during the civil war, three of them were more significant than others.
- The attack on Fort Sumter. On April 12, 1861, the confederacy bombed Fort Sumter for 34 hours straight in Charleston, North Carolina. The Confederacy forced the Union to surrender. This battle infuriated the north, and ultimately started the war.
- April 26, 1862. The Fall of New Orleans. This battle was especially important, because it was a huge part of the Anaconda plan, and without this victory for the Union, they might have not won the war. This city was a port city, so this cut off supplies and trade, while it also took control of the southern half of the Mississippi river.
- The Battle of Gettysburg. This battle took place from July 1 to July 3 in 1863. This was the bloodiest battle in the entire war. It was a Union victory, and it crushed Robert E. Lee's hopes of ever finding a position in the North.
