Could the Civil War have been Avoided?
Some say yes, others may say no. Based on facts and common knowledge, the ultimate conclusion is no. The Civil War’s severity could have been dampened, but the war was inevitable. The conflicts between the North and the South were simply too great to overcome. The fact that the North was densely populated with abolitionists was a key issue. It put pressure on the South, because they had more control in Congress. Another key issue that really could not have been avoided, was the election of Abraham Lincoln. In his debates, he discussed that he didn’t oppose slavery where it stood, he just opposed it spreading. This was a huge deal-breaker for the South. They immediately seceded from the Union, even before Lincoln was inaugurated. One of the major issues, was that the Union refused to relinquish their forts in the South, and even recognize the Confederacy as a separate country. The one reason that really tipped the scale, was the fact that the “Confederacy” decided to attack Fort Sumter. This was an act of retaliation, that led President Abraham Lincoln to declare war against the Confederacy. The Civil War was a bit brutal and over-the-top, but wasn’t necessarily avoidable.
